Before 2011 there was hardly anywhere to buy bitcoin. Buying a dollar's worth every day back then was, in practice, very hard. The price is real, but treat it as a theoretical exercise.
How it's calculated
Every day, from the date you choose to the last day with a price, $1 of bitcoin is bought at that day's price. Everything bought is added up and valued at the latest price. There's no model and no projection: it's what would have happened with the prices that actually existed.
The exercise doesn't deduct fees. In real life every purchase has a cost, and with one-dollar purchases that cost adds up.
Prices start on July 18, 2010, when bitcoin began trading. That's why you can't pick an earlier date.
Prices: Coin Metrics Community Data, one price per day, checked against Bitstamp's daily close since September 2011.
